LIVESTOCK INCINERATORS DO NOT REQUIRE AIR PERMITS

For Immediate Release, August 2, 2001

DES MOINES - The DNR is not requiring air permits for incinerators used to dispose of dead livestock, citing an existing permitting exemption in state rules for agriculture.

"A legal review has determined that livestock incinerators fall under the agriculture exemption for air permits," said Pete Hamlin, DNR air bureau chief. Hamlin said the incinerators still must meet visible emission standards that prevent smoke densities greater than 40 percent opacity.

He said that more people are inquiring about incineration due to increased costs for rendering services.

He said incinerators that are poorly designed or improperly used could exceed emission limit standards. "It will be up to the operator to use the incinerator properly on their own volition," said Hamlin.
