Call in program discontinued

VOLUNTARY PROGRAM BEGUN TO CURB EXCESSIVE EXHAUST

For Immediate Release, August 2, 2001

DES MOINES - Iowans tired of breathing excess vehicle exhaust may want to remember a new toll-free phone number, 1-866-TAILPIPE, to call in license numbers of smoking vehicles to help reduce the heaviest emitters from the roadways.

The DNR has started a voluntary, educational program that allows citizens to call in the license numbers to encourage some vehicle owners to consider reducing emissions - steps that also can also increase the efficiency and longevity of vehicles.

"Once a license number is called in, the owner is sent educational materials to help them diagnose the probable causes based on the color of smoke and the remedies," said the DNR's Sheri Walz, who oversees the effort.

Once owners learn some repairs can be simple, such as replacing a clogged air filter, tune-ups or other service, many will voluntarily take action. Some repairs pay for themselves by reducing fuel usage up to 13 percent, maintaining resale value and extending the life of the vehicle.

Walz said there are no fines or requirements to fix the vehicle, but programs in other states show about half of vehicle owners will choose repairs once they learn of the benefits.

"Smoke indicates something isn't working correctly. Not seeking repairs can make matters worse." She said while some repairs can be simple, others may be substantial. "Some vehicles won't be worth extensive repairs, but at least the owner will have educational materials to help them make their own informed decision."

She said nearly 200 reports have been made so far.

Walz said vehicles and other mobile sources release 50 percent of toxin emissions and even higher percentages of smog forming gases into Iowa's air.

"One smoking car can emit as much as 10 to 30 properly operating vehicles," said Walz. "If a few hundred repairs are made, that's like removing thousands of cars' worth of exhaust from the air."

To make a report, call toll-free 1-866-TAILPIPE or make online reports at www.iowacleanair.com. Provide the location, license number, time and make and model.

Walz encouraged people to ensure safe driving habits by making reports only when safe and convenient.
