Asbestos Video Clears the Air before the Construction Season
DES MOINES-In time for the busy spring construction season, the DNR is offering videotapes to assist Iowans in understanding federal asbestos rules that can impact renovation and demolition activities.
"Right now, people are planning construction activity that could include renovation and demolition work-those activities are potentially subject to asbestos rules," said Brian Button, DNR air information specialist. He said the 30-minute video helps people in the planning process learn if and when the rules apply and how to comply.
"We point out the most common mistakes to help viewers avoid them," said Button.
Before renovation projects and demolition, asbestos materials need to be identified by a qualified inspector and if enough is present, removed using certified workers to prevent asbestos fibers from becoming airborne.
Materials containing asbestos poses no health threat if in good condition and left undisturbed, but poses higher risk when disturbed or broken. "Renovation and demolition generates a lot of dust that needs to be free of asbestos," he said.
Private homeowners are generally exempt from the requirements. To borrow the video for free or purchase for $5.00, call the DNR at 515-242-5100 or visit www.iowacleanair.com.
