DNR Cautions Against Leaf Burning
Posted October 24, 2002
DES MOINES - The Department of Natural Resources issued cautions Thursday against open burning this fall because of public health concerns.
"Fall is a busy open burning season, and many people want to get rid of accumulations of leaves, lawn debris and brush," said Brian Button, a DNR air information specialist. "But smoke from these fires contains particles of soot and toxins, and can damage lung tissue, send asthmatics to hospitals and create odor and haze nuisances."
Leaf smoke can create local air pollution levels much higher than all auto and industrial emissions combined.
Button urged people to first consider cleaner, safer disposal options such as composting, mulching, recycling or municipal waste disposal instead of burning. If open burning is done, state and local laws must be followed, and the health and welfare of neighbors should be considered.
