EPA Approves 13 New MACT Standards

EPA approved 13 new MACT standard rules the final week of August. Facilities typically have four months from the final date to submit an initial notification under the rules, unless the standard specifies differently.

The industries covered are Organic Liquids Distribution; Miscellaneous Organic Chemical Production, Miscellaneous Coating Manufacturing; Site Remediation; Miscellaneous Metal Parts and Products (surface coating) and Asphalt/Coal Tar Application on Metal Pipes; Iron and Steel Foundries; Primary Magnesium; Metal Can (surface coating); Taconite Iron Ore Processing; Plastic Parts (surface coating); Combustion Turbines; Lime Manufacturing; and Mercury Cell Chlor-Alkali Production.

Those facilities engaged in any of the above activities should visit www.epa.gov/ttn/atw/mactfnlalph.html for additional policy and technical information or contact the DNR's Diane Brockshus at (515) 281-4801 or Diane.Brockshus@dnr.iowa.gov.

EPA also delisted Chlorine Production. EPA will propose a MACT standard for utilities by December 15, 2003 and finalize the rule in 2004. Remaining MACT rules will be completed by February 2004.
