In June of 2003, the DNR applied an intensive weeklong "Kaizen" review, a business process improvement technique inspired by Japanese methods, to improve efficiencies in construction permitting. Now the time to issue standard permits has fallen 81 percent, with the average review time of 62 days reduced to 12, a permit backlog nearly eradicated, and permit forms streamlined. In addition, applicants can call 1-877-AIR-IOWA before submitting an application to ensure everything is complete.
The whole effort focused on eliminating unproductive time in permit processing and rapid implementation of ideas without sacrifices to actual time spent on review or environmental protection. Learn more below.
