Residential and Commercial Efficiency

Saving energy and utility costs is a priority for many consumers. Measures such as efficient light fixtures, higher insulation levels, improved heating and cooling systems, energy-efficient appliances and temperature controls can save a substantial amount of energy and money of a building's energy costs. Through grants funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Environmental Protection, the Energy and Waste Management Bureau (EWMB) of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources advocates the implementation and enforcement of building energy codes, conducts energy assessments in public and nonprofit facilities, providing information to Iowans on energy efficient materials and processes and other energy efficiency implementations.

The Iowa State Energy Office resides in Department of Natural Resources Energy and Waste Management Bureau.

The goals of the EWMB include:

  • Provides recommendations regarding standards for energy conservation prior to the adoption of those standards to the State Building Code Commissioner;
  • Advocate and encourage local jurisdictions to adopt and enforce the state building energy codes;
  • Facilitates and assists Iowans to meet their energy efficiency goals and implementation of renewable energy and energy efficiency implementation projects;
  • Conducts research and develops proposals to secure funding for new and existing energy management programs in Iowa;
  • Administers the Iowa Energy Bank and State of Iowa Facilities Improvement Corporation (SIFIC) programs that provide energy assessments and assists with funding opportunities for public facilities, public and private educational facilities, nonprofit facilities and state facilities;
  • Conduct Life Cycle Cost Analyses (LCCAs) as per Iowa Code statutes on new construction on state-owned buildings;
  • Provides resources and facilitates training to educate building professionals, policy makers, community leaders, and all Iowans on energy efficiency implementations that may result in energy savings;
