The Vermeer Science Center at Central College in Pella is the first LEED™ certified project
in Iowa. The project received a silver LEED certification from the United States Green Building Council.
The project features educational displays on the sustainable aspects of the building, including double
passed air and reheat recovery systems, reflective roofing materials, day lighting and a solar powered
outdoor fountain. The center is also home to study rooms, offices, auditorium, greenhouse and museum
display area.
LEED ™ Registered Projects in Iowa
Iowa is home to several LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) registered projects.
The projects include:
- Iowa Laboratories Facility
Ankeny
This project is a 20-acre development that will house laboratories for a number of state agencies. Scheduled for completion in December 2004, this was the first project pursuing LEED certification resulting from the Iowa Sustainable Design Initiative.
- Davenport Federal Courthouse
Davenport
Registered in 2002, this renovation of a historical building shows the efforts of the federal government in its commitment to LEED design and urban revitalization of an existing building. The building will feature three floors on a footprint of 20,937 square feet in downtown Davenport.
- Iowa Primate Learning Sanctuary
Des Moines
This project, now in the design stage, will cover 70,000 square feet in a rural brownfield setting to provide unique research and education about primates and early man. When constructed, the sanctuary will feature an interpretive center, office space, residences and a greenhouse.
- National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium

- North Corridor Elementary
North Liberty
This school will include high performance sustainable design aspects such as geothermal heating and daylighting. The 61,000 square foot school will also feature environmentally friendly parking areas and recycled building materials. Project completion is planned for the 2005 school year.
- Iowa Department of Public Safety
Des Moines
This renovation of a 1927 International Harvester showroom will house 110,000 square feet of office on five floors. In addition to features like alternative transportation facilities and water efficient landscaping, this project will use recycled and locally produced materials in its construction, slated for occupancy in 2005.
- Marion Arts and Education Center
Marion
This project will feature sustainable design both inside and out. Extensive plans for the 16,000 square foot interior includes art galleries, offices for the local Trees Forever non-profit and meeting spaces estimated to be occupied in May 2005. The project will be located at Lowe Park and will encourage application of sustainable interior and exterior design principles by visitors.
- Grinnell College CERA Environmental Education Center
Kellogg
This project serves as a research and teaching facility for various field and environmental classes as well as general courses. The building will feature sustainable design and environmental stewardship guidelines. The center will be located on a 365-acre nature preserve.
"LEED Registered" indicates that the building owner has registered the project with the United States Green Building Council, which indicates that the building is planning to seek a green building certification using the LEED Green Building Rating System.
