South Pine Creek

Stocked by Decorah
Some Natural Reproduuction
Special Regulations South Pine is a truly unique trout stream in Iowa. It is quite small but it does contain Iowa’s largest naturally reproducing population of brook trout. Remember all trout caught in this stream must be immediately released and only artificial lures may be used. It is approximately a one mile hike through rugged county to get to South Pine. Also, due to its small size it does not allow for much fishing pressure, so if you see a car or two in the parking lot you may opt for another stream. Genetic analysis conducted on the brook trout in South Pine Creek indicates that this population is distinct from brook trout strains in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Brook trout eggs are collected form this population each fall and taken to the Manchester Hatchery where they are hatched and raised to a fingerling size. These small brook trout are then used to establish brook trout populations in additional Iowa streams.
