How do I tell northerns from muskies or from tigers?

Telling northerns, muskies, and tigers apart. Muskellunge: Muskies usually are olive to dark grey with tiger-like vertical markings on the side. They have six to eight pores on each side of the lower jaw. Only the upper half of the cheek and gill cover is scaled.

Northerns: Bluish-green to grey color with irregular rows of light-colored horizontal bean-shaped spots on the sides, the entire check and upper half of the gill is scaled.

Tiger: Tiger muskies display the cheek and gill cover pattern of the northern pike (entire cheek and upper half of the gill cover) and body markings (vertical) of the muskie. The sensory pores vary from five to eight.
