Inland waters
The daily bag limit is 3 in any combination of black bass.
The possession limit is 6 in any combination of black bass.
The season is open all year.
Border Lakes
The closed season on black bass is from February 16 through the Friday before the Saturday closest to May 1 on these lakes:
- Little Spirit Lake, Dickinson County
- Iowa Lake, Emmet County
- Tuttle (Okamanpedan) Lake, Emmet County
- Burt (Swag) Lake, Kossuth County
- Iowa Lake, Osceola County
The daily bag limit and possession limit is 6 black bass.
Boundary Rivers
The daily bag limit is 5 in any combination of black bass
The possession limit is 10 in any combination of black bass.
The season is open all year.
Special Size and Catch Limits
There are special size and catch limits on all species of black bass in some public fishing waters. Except, there is no length limit on the Big Sioux River where there is a common boundary between Iowa and South Dakota.
A 15-inch minimum length limit applies on all public lakes unless posted otherwise.
A 12-inch minimum length limit applies in all:
- inland streams
- river impoundments
- Missouri chutes and backwaters with intermittent or constant flow
A 14-inch minimum length limit applies in the Mississippi River and associated chutes and backwaters.
A 15-inch minimum length limit applies on Federal flood control reservoirs:
- Red Rock
- Saylorville
- Rathbun
- Coralville
A 16-inch minimum length limit applies on Swan Lake, Carrol County.
A 18-inch minimum length limit applies on:
- Ada Hayden Heritage Park/Lake, Story County
- Ahquabi/Hooper Pond, Warren County
- Big Creek, Polk County
- Casey Lake, Tama County
- Krumm Pond, Jasper County
- Lake Hendricks, Howard County
- Lake Keomah, Mahaska County
- Little Wall Lake, Hamilton County
- Pleasant Creek, Linn County
- South Prairie Lake, Black Hawk County
- Thomas Mitchell/Yellow Banks, Polk County
A catch and release only limit applies on:
- Brown's Lake, Jackson County
- Lake Wapello, Davis County
12-16 inch fish must be immediately released alive on Hawthorn Lake, Mahaska County.
12-18 inch fish must be immediately released alive on Sugema Lake, Van Buren County.
A catch and release only limit applies in the:
- Middle Raccoon River, Guthrie County downstream from Lennon Mill Dam at Panora to the dam at Redfield
- Maquoketa River, Delaware County downstream from Lake Delhi Dam to the first county gravel road bridge
- Cedar River, Mitchell County downstream from the Otranto Dam to the bridge on County Road T26, south of St. Ansgar
- Upper Iowa River, Winneshiek County downstream for the Fifth Street bridge in Decorah to the Upper Dam
