Special Fishing Trout Regulations


  • The season is open all year for all trout in both inland waters and boundary rivers.
  • A trout fee is required for any trout fishing (taking and possessing).
  • The daily bag limit is 5 fish
  • The possession limit is 10 fish
  • No size limit or bait/lure limit apply to most trout waters.
  • See below for details on more restrictive regulations.
    • Spring Branch Creek, Delaware County. A 14-inch minimum length limit applies for all trout from the spring source to county highway D5X as posted. Only artificial lures may be used.
    • Bloody Run Creek, Clayton County. A 14-inch minimum length limit applies for brown trout as posted between Highway 18 and Iris Ave. Only artificial lures may be used.
    • French Creek, Allamakee County. Catch-and-release only for brown trout as posted between Hartley Dr and the spring source. Only artificial lures may be used.
    • Waterloo Creek, Allamakee County. Catch-and-release only for all trout as posted downstream of the highway 76 bridge. Only artificial lures may be used.
    • Hewitt and Ensigns Creeks. Clayton County. Catch-and-release only for all trout as posted. Only artificial lures may be used.
    • McLoud Run, Linn County. Catch-and-release only for all trout as posted. Only artificial lures may be used.
    • South Pine Creek, Winneshiek County. Catch-and-release only for all trout as posted on the publicly owned property. Only artificial lures may be used.
  • Artificial lure means lures that do not contain or have applied to them any natural or man-made substance designed to attract fish by the sense of taste or smell.
