Operation Releaf

Operation ReLeaf is a partnership initiative funded by Alliant Energy and administered by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, several host county conservation boards, and select Resource Conservation & Development Centers (RC&Ds). In all, 3,600 high quality, three- to eight-foot landscaping trees will be offered for $25 each. The trees retail for $65 or more and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

Recognizing the fact that private lands offer the greatest return on community reforestation and energy conservation, Alliant Energy and the Iowa DNR have developed a successful residential tree-planting program that was applied in 20 regions across the state during the spring and fall of 2002, prompting expansion of the program this year. These private trees provide benefits not only to the property owner, but also to the neighborhood and community as a whole.

"Encouraging residents to plant trees in their yard is an effective way to reduce energy costs and promote a healthy and aesthetically pleasing environment," says Eliot Protsch, Alliant Energy - Interstate Power and Light president. "We're pleased to be offering Operation ReLeaf and hope many Iowa residents participate."

Operation ReLeaf participants must be Alliant Energy customers. Advance application is required and purchase is limited to two trees per household. In the event that there are additional trees available on day of distribution, those trees will be released for purchase at that time. Applications will be available at host conservation board offices and on the web at www.alliantenergy.com approximately four weeks prior to the respective county's scheduled event. Applications will also be on the Alliant Energy website.

Tree species offered will vary from county to county and include both shade trees and evergreens. "All trees are being purchased through a bidding process from local nurseries," says John Walkowiak, bureau chief for the Iowa DNR's Bureau of Forestry. "This is a wonderful opportunity for homeowners to get a quality tree at an affordable price."
