300-Feet On-Site Well Survey

This notice is intended to clarify the department’s policy concerning the 300-feet radius well survey to be conducted as part of the Receptor Survey – Groundwater Well Survey. An on-site well survey must be conducted to identify all wells in a 300-feet radius of the site or you may contact all landowners within the 300-feet radius of the site.

The Receptor Survey, including the 300-feet well survey, should be performed for all Tier 1 or Tier 2 Risk-Based Corrective Action (RBCA) assessments, as well as for annual Site Monitoring Reports (SMRs). The department expects the 300-feet on-site well survey or landowner contact within a 300-feet radius, be conducted annually. A completed Receptor Survey with 300-feet on-site well survey should have been completed within one year of the date of report submittal.

It can take over a year for a water well to be placed on the Iowa Geological Survey Bureau (GSB) well listings. The intent of performing an annual on-site well survey is to identify new water wells that may have been installed in the site vicinity, but for which no record currently exists. For this same reason, the certified groundwater professional may want to supplement GSB data with information from the local county offices. Counties authorized to issue well construction permits and their staff contacts and telephone numbers are identified on the reverse side of DNR Form 542-1530, Water Supply Notification. If a county is not listed on this table, you may want to contact Russell Tell, Water Supply Section, Department of Natural Resources, 515-725-0462, for additional well information.
