Vapor Screening

We have observed a few instances where maximum readings were obtained at several locations with a vapor measuring device while screening a soil boring.  Deciding where the soil sample should be obtained for laboratory analysis is problematic.  More than one soil sample may be necessary to vertically characterize soil contamination.

Typically the UST Fund will only pay for one sample per boring.  We suggest contacting GAB (515/276-8046) if these situations occur and you believe more than one soil sample from a boring is warranted.

If drilling is not being conducted during business hours we suggest collecting and preserving the soil samples.  Discuss the situation with GAB staff when they are available.

Please contact Elaine Douskey at (515)281-8011 or elaine.douskey@dnr.state.ia.us if you have questions concerning this posting..
