USTfield Projects

"USTfield" applies to abandoned or underused industrial and commercial properties where reuse is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination from underground petroleum storage tanks.  On August 23, 2001 EPA Administrator Christie Whitman announced the agency would provide $4 million in financial assistance to assist in cleaning up these properties.  The program, part of the EPA’s USTfields Initiative, is designed to foster redevelopment by returning contaminated sites to productive economic and public use. The new pilot program is similar to the EPA’s Brownfields initiative in that it helps revitalize industrial areas. However, the Brownfields program doesn’t allow for cleanup of petroleum contamination.  The USTfields Initiative will help bridge the gap.  The EPA selected 40 pilot projects nationwide.  The projects selected in Iowa are located in Des Moines and Clinton.  Click on the headings for more information.
