Iowa Installer Licensing Program

On May 24, 2007 the Governor signed SF 499, effecting changes in the administration of the Underground Storage Tank regulations including the administration of the UST installer licensing program. Formerly, the UST Fund Board administered this program, but effective July 6, 2007, the oversight of the program was transferred to DNR.

The DNR intends to examine the existing rules for the installer licensing program and make changes where necessary at a later date. At a minimum, the rules must be updated, liability coverage for licensed installers will increase from $250K to $1M, and all UST installations, repairs, testing and closures in Iowa will have to be completed by an individual licensed through the Iowa UST licensing program. Currently, companies or individuals are not required to be licensed to permanently close tanks in Iowa.
