The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) may authorize the holding of organized special events (an organized race, exhibition, or demonstration of limited duration which is conducted according to a prearranged schedule and in which general public interest is manifested) within the state. The DNR shall adopt rules relating to the conduct of special events held under DNR permits, designating the equipment and facilities necessary for safe operation of vessels, and for the safety of operators, participants, and observers.
Permits for regattas, motorboat or other boat races, marine parades, tournaments, or exhibitions etc. to be held on Iowa state waters must be received from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources at least 30 days in advance of the event. The application is below and may be printed off, filled out, and given to either the local Conservation Officer or Park Ranger for approval. Applications may also be obtained from the Conservation Officers or by writing the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Wallace State Office Building, Des Moines, Iowa 50319-0034. If the event is being held on federally controlled waters, a permit from the U.S. Coast Guard is also required.
