Purpose: To protect children who are too young to make the decision to wear a lifejacket.
- Iowa is one of only three states without a mandatory lifejacket wear law for children.
- There is a law requiring children under 13 to wear lifejackets while on federal waters. Federal waters in Iowa are the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, Saylorville, Red Rock, Rathbun and Coralville Reservoirs. Officers can not enforce the federal law without an Iowa law.
- There are more than 234,335 boats on Iowa waters, and the number continues to increase. More boats mean more children at risk.
Purpose: This potential legislation would lower current 0.10 blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level to operate a motorobat or sailboat while intoxicated, to .08 BAC.
- To have a consistant blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level between operating a boat while intoxicated (BWI) and operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI).
- Iowa is one of only 19 states who has a .10% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level.
