There are nine supervisory positions in the Law Enforcement Bureau. All are Conservation Officers.

Six District Supervisors oversee the state's 88 field officers and work out of offices across the state. One Recreational Safety Program Supervisor is in charge of six Recreational Safety Officers and works out of the Central (Des Moines) office. Also in the Central Office are the Assistant Chief and the Chief of the Law Enforcement Bureau.

All of these positions require the majority of time be spent handling administrative duties (maintaining budgets, overseeing inventory, and addressing complex issues with the public and officers, to name a few), but all perform field patrol on busy holiday and season opening weekends.

District Supervisors and the Recreational Safety Program Supervisor are classified as PSE2; the assistant chief is a PSE3; and the Chief is a PSE4.

Hiring is through the Iowa Department of Administrative Services and requires supervisory and management preparation as well as officer experience.
