Mines of Spain Recreation Area - Dream Catchers
When: Sunday, January 13, 2008 - 1:00 pm - Meet at EB Lyons Interpretive Center
What: Learn how to make a dream catcher. Also, learn what the dream catcher was used for and who used it. You will have the opportunity to make your own to take home. A hands-on learning experience with Jay Cox, a local expert on the rendezvous era.

Lake Manawa State Park - Winterfest Ice Fishing Derby
When: Saturday, Januay 26 - 7:00 am - 1:00 pm
What: $10 per person pre-registration(nonrefundable), $15 per person on day of event. Pre-registration forms can be found at www.winterfestderby.com. Please send forms to park office by 1/18/08. Ice fishing contest with over $75,000 in cash and prizes to be given away.

Mines of Spain Recreation Area - Paddlefish
When: Sunday, January 27, 2008 - 1:00 pm - Meet at EB Lyons Interpretive Center
What: Presentation by Dennis Wiess, DNR Wildlife Biologist, covering the biology and life history of paddlefish, some of the results of the 10 years that the Bellevue Research Station has been catching and tagging paddlefish along with the MICRA study that some 22 states have been capturing and tagging paddlefish, and some of the current problems facing paddlefish today because of the world trade of caviar. A real paddlefish will be present to show the unique feeding techniques that these prehistoric fish use. Also a demonstration of the types of fishing poles and equipment needed to catch a paddlefish from the Mississippi River. These paddlefish reach weights of 50 to 60 pounds in this region of the Mississippi River.

What: Presentation by Dennis Wiess, DNR Wildlife Biologist, on where walleye spend their time during the winter, spring, summer and fall. Discover the secrets to where they live and why they move throughout the year.

Mines of Spain Recreation Area - Indians of the Upper Mississippi River
When: Sunday, February 24, 2008 - 1:00 pm - Meet at EB Lyons Interpretive Center
What: This program will explore the lifestyles, tools, foods and myths of the American Indians living along the Mississippi River over the past 10,000 years. The various time periods and advancement of new techniques associated with each time period will be discussed as well as the way these changes affected the way people lived. Both original artifacts and recreated artifacts will be shown during the program. Presentation by Mark Wagner of the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium.

Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area - Ice Fishing Tournament
When: Sunday, February 24, 2008 - 19:00 am - 3:00 pm
What: Ice Fishing Tournament - 6 species with live weight in only. $100.00 big fish prize for each species. Raffle for a $500.00 door prize. Miscellaneous prize drawings throughout the day. Concession will be available.

Mines of Spain Recreation Area - Bird Banding
When: Sunday, March 9, 2008 - 1:00 pm - Meet at EB Lyons Interpretive Center
What: Assist in the capture of song birds and get a chance to hold and look at various song birds found in the area. This is a good chance to learn to identify and get familiar with the birds at your feeders. Presentation by Dave Shealer, Professor at Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa. He will identify, weigh, measure, and determine their sex and health.

Mines of Spain Recreation Area - History of the Mines of Spain
When: Sunday, March 30, 2008 - 1:00 pm - Meet at EB Lyons Interpretive Center
What: Presentation by Gerda Preston Hartmann, local historian. Learn about the cultural history of this area as she goes through the farming, mining and family histories associated with the Mines of Spain and Dubuque areas. The park has been designated as a National Historic Landmark, National Heritage Area and has an Archeological Site Listing. The park is loaded with history of various cultures. Learn about the people that once called the Mines of Spain area home.

Big Creek State Park - Big Creek Road Race

Brushy Creek State Recreation Area - Cache-In Trash-Out
When: Saturday, April 19, 2008 - 9:00 am to 4:00 pm
What: Want to look for hidden treasures? Then this will be your chance. A Cache In-Trash Out Event consists of using GPS units to search for hidden treasures while picking up trash along the way. There will be a CITO event and an Equestrian CITO event. Both will start at the South Day Use Area (base camp), west of the South Campground. At base camp you will be given instructions for those new to the sport, rules, and coordinates for the day, and GPS unit checkout available with ID (few available, first-come/first-serve). This is a Come & Go event. Potluck lunch provided at noon. Please bring something to share, table service (plate, fork, etc.) and blanket/chair. A few picnic tables will be available. Hotdogs, condiments, and water will be provided. Everyone is welcome to attend, beginners to advanced, children to adult. Please bring gloves, GPS, and data cable, comfortable attire/shoes, and a water bottle. Garbage bags will be given out. Camping is available.

Lewis and Clark State Park - Earth Day sponsored by The Benevolent Order of the Corps of Discovery.
When: Saturday, April 19, 2008 - 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
What: Volunteers to clean-up Lewis & Clark State Park, and around Blue Lake. Registration of volunteers from 9am to 9:30am. Coffee, juice and rolls to be provided by Benevolent Order of the Corps of Discovery. Clean-up from 9:45 to noon with lunch provided by BOCD. At 1:30 additional work will be completed. There will be boat rides weather permitting.

Red Haw State Park - Red Bud Days Kids Fishing Outing
When: Saturday, April 19, 2008 - 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
What: Short presentation by Fisheries Biologist Randy Schultz and fisheries staff on safety and the fish present at Red Haw. Then the kid's fishing outing starts - bring the whole family. Some fishing gear will be available for those who need it. Night crawlers will be provided. Prize drawing for those under 16 years of age. Hot dogs, marshmallows and ice tea will be provided.

Volga River State Recreation Area - Trail clean-up
When: Saturday, April 26, 2008 - 8:00 am to noon
What: Join volunteers and park staff to help clean up the trails.

Brushy Creek State Recreation Area - Iowa's Wildside

What: Meet at the beach campground near the playground. Learn about Iowa's habitats and wildlife.

Geode State Park - Name the Stars

What: Meet by the middle shower building in the campground. Sponsored by the Southeast Iowa Astronomy Club - learn the names of the stars and constellations. If there is bad weather, it will be held Saturday night.

Union Grove State Park - Water

What: Meet at the Legion shelter for a presentation by Frank Rickerl, park manager, on water quality issues. On display will be beach cleaner and methods to control the geese. Also discussion on the upcoming Watershed Project

Bellevue State Park - Butterfly Gardening for Beginners
When: Saturday, May 3, 2008 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
What: Meet at the Butterfuly Garden. Learn the basics in planning, implementing, and maintaining a garden to attract a wide variety of butterflies from spring to fall. Hands-on opportunities will be available for those interested. Don't forget - bring your work gloves!

Big Creek State Park - Prairie Rescue Day
When: Saturday, May 3, 2008 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
What: Annual environmental work day. Participants will plant and mulch trees, work in the prairie, paint picnic tables, and pick up litter. Volunteers will meet at the beach at 9:00 am for job assigments and instructions. Contact park office at 515-984-6473 for additional information. After Prairie Rescue Day, Private Lands Biologist Dusten Paulus will do a program on the Big Creek Water Shed Improvement project. He will discuss the project purpose, area involved and other possible grants.

Brushy Creek State Recreation Area - Fishing Derby
When: Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 9:00 am to noon at the Fish Pier Point
What: This fishing derby is for those who would like to learn how to fish. It's a great way for parents to learn how to make their children's fishing trip successful. You'll learn what fish species look like, what they like to eat and how to tie on a slip bobber and hook. It's FREE, so come and join in on the fun! A few fishing rods will be available and bait will be provided. All ages welcome, cookout afterwards. Meet at the Fish Pier Point at 9:00 am. There will be cashing contest and prizes.

Cedar Rock - Candlelight Walk

What: Open house. At 7:00 pm hear Cedar Rock's story of Wapsi and Pinicon. Meet at the front of the house.

George Wyth State Park - Who Do You See Looking Back At You?

What: Meet at the campground shower building and enjoy a 1 to 1-1/2 hour bird hike lead by Tom Stone. Please were comfortable walking shoes, bring water, binoculars or cameras if you want better views. Park will be available in the campground parking lot and everyone is welcome.

Gull Point State Park - A look into the past of the Iowa Great Lakes area

What: From glaciers to Native American massacre's, come and learn more about the unique history of the Iowa Great Lakes area. Meet at the campground check-in area for a presentation by Charles Vigdal in cooperation with the Dickinson County Conservation Board.

Honey Creek State Park - Boating Basics
When: Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 7:30 pm
What: Meet at the north shower building. Learn about safe boating methods, Iowa boating laws, boating ethics, and buoy identification. Presentation by park ranger John Steinbach.

Lake Anita State Park - Camper Appreciation
When: Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 8:000 pm
What: Meet south of the playground for discussion with park staff on upcoming events, fisheries status, work being done on invasive species and a chance for questions about the park. Following the discussion, there will be a family oriented movie with free popcorn sponsored by the Friends of Lake Anita.

Lake Darling State Park - Scavenger Hunt

What: Meet at the campground by the main shower building. Participate in an entertaining scavenger hunt to encourage you to carefully observe and interact with nature. Presented after the scavenger hunt will be a trivia game "How Well Do You Know Nature?" This is great for the whole family. Presentations by Sabrina Greiner and Staci Lowe.

Lake Darling State Park - Discover the night
When: Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 8:15 pm
What: Meet at the red restroom in the south campground. This excitin hike will cover about 3/4 mile of fairly level terrain around the prairie and timer. Together we will explore the sounds of the night and unearth animal's adaptations for living in the dark. Guided by Sabrina Greiner and Staci Lowe.

Lacey Keosauqua State Park - Fish Identification
When: Saturday, May 3, 2008 - 9:30 am
What: Meet at the campground and see a presentation on fish species in Iowa, abundance of food and habitat improvement. There will be live fish for identification, brochures, fish buttons for the kids and much more information available. Presented by Fisheries Bureau Biologists.

Lacey Keosauqua State Park - Mammals of Iowa

What: Meet at the campground for a program using the fur case full of examples. Learn how to recognize an animal by its color and appearance. Presented by Justin Predetti, Park Manager.

What: Meet at the playground. Volunteer naturalists Pat Crawford will provide a scavenger hunt for natural objects such as fur, leaves, rocks, etc. Help kids and adults to observe the world more closely.

What: Meet at the campground check-in building. Mahaska County Naturalist Pete Eyherald and park staff will give a presentation on Iowa Snakes. After the presentation, there will be marshmallow roasting.

Prairie Rose Staet Park - Campfire 101

What: Meet at the new cabins to learn the proper way to build a campfire, what to burn in your fire, and pick up some fun ideas and tips for when sitting around the campfire.

Red Haw State Park - Fishing

What: Meet at the north side os the campground shower building. Mark Richardsen, Fisheries Bureau technician and park staff will demonstrate an overview of Red Haw fish and fishing techniques. Live fish from Red Haw and fisheries sampling gear (electro-fishing boat and nets will be present).

Rock Creek State Park - 1/4 Mile Hike

What: Meet at the campground kiosk and take a 1/4 mile hike on the Twin Bridges Trail. This interpretive trail has 12 posted identificaion markers. Learn how to identify specific trees, poison ivy, birds, and other wildlife that make themselves available for us to observe.

Springbrook State Park - Birds of Prey

What: Meet at the basketball court for a presentation by the ISU Wildlife Care Clinic. Have you every wondered what to do when you stumble upon that fawn in the woods or the baby bunny in the back yard? The Wildlife Care Clinic will share what to do and what not to do when you find animals that are alone or injured. The clinic's permanent raptors will also be visiting so you have an opportunity to learn about these beautiful birds and see them up close.

Springbrook State Park - Kayaking in Iowa?
When: Saturday, May 3, 2008 4:00 pm
What: Meet at the beach area and park at the beach parking lot. Participants will be taught how to carry, paddle, maneuver and turn-over kayaks. All of the equipment will be provided, you only need to bring yourself and bring a friend, too! This program is geared toward beginners and is done in calm waters near the beach.

Springbrook State Park - Bird House Construction for Kids
When: Saturday, May 3, 2008 7:00 pm
What: Meet at the basketball court. Spring is a great time to build birdhouses. Kids will enjoy making a bird house to take home or give to someone who enjoys watching birds. The material will be provided and no power tools will be used. Kids are encouraged to bring their parents.

What:Meet at the riverfront shelter. Desoto National Wilflie Refuge staff will give a presentation on pallid sturgeon and the Missouri River. They will discuss the endangered sturgeon and efforts going on in DeSoto to provide habitat for them.

Wilson Island State Park - Wilson Island
When: Saturday, May 3, 2008 4:00 pm
What:Meet at the riverfront shelter and learn the history of Wilson Island - how the island began, where it's name came from and how it got to where it is today. Presented by Wilson Island staff.

Yellow River State Forest - Trout and Coldwater Streams

What: Meet at the Campground host site in Little Paint Campground. Presentation by Gary Siegworth, Fisheries biologist, with a hands-on program with live trout.

Lake Manawa State Park - Improving the park, one piece of litter at a time.
When: Sunday, May 4, 2008 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm
What: Meet at the shelter 6 area. Park manager, Dan Jacobs will give a program on the importance of keeping the outdoors litter free and a brief talk on volunteer safety. Trash bags, gloves, bottled water and snacks will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants and sleeves, good shoes and sunscreen. Volunteer Mary Sellers will be giving out small prizes and award certificates at the end of the clean-up.

Mines of Spain State Recreation Area - Record the Ribbit

What:Meet at the Horseshoe Bluff Interpretive Area for a program on frogs and toads. Learn where they live, what they eat and what sounds they make. Also learn how to make the sounds of various frogs. Presentation given by Naturalists Valerie Kimler and park ranger Wayne Buccholtz. Sponsored by the Friends of Mines of Spain. Backbone State Park - 2nd Annual Christmas in July
When: Friday, July 18, 2008 - Saturday, July 19, 2008
What: In the south campground, decorate your campsite in the spirit of Christmas starting on Friday night and Saturday for prizes and fun. Saturday night the public is invited to drive thru and view the lights and decorations. Prizes will be given in several categories from the most lights, to the biggest reindeer and most original. There will be winter games for the kids starting at 9AM on Saturday at the Beach and in the South Lake Campground. Santa Claus will arrive in the campground at 5:30 pm. Carriage rides will be privded by Clip Clop Wagon and Carriage Service from 6 to 8 pm. The Backbone Lake Friends Group will be located at the entrance of the campground and offer Christmas ornaments for a donation. For more details and information call the park office at 563-927-2527.

Two routes are offered. The short route is 12 miles and stays on the bike trail to Big Creek beach and back. The long route is approximately 40 miles and visits the areas listed above. Fort Atkinson State Perserve - Rendezvous
When: Saturday, Sept 27, 2008 - 9:30 am - 4:30 pm
            Sunday, Sept 28, 2008 - 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
What: 32nd year of live display of what life was like in the 1840s when the fort was being built and used. Trade blankets, food vendors, craft people and military actors portraying the 1840s time period will demonstrate through displays, completing in contest and performing to educate the public of line at this interesting place and time.

Mines of Spain State Recreation Area - Hike with the Naturalist
When: Saturday, September 27, 2008, 2:30 pm (depending on the weather)
What:Meet at the E.B. Lyons Interpretive Center for a hike on the Nature Center Trails (1-1/2 mi). Have you ever had questions about plants, birds or the history of the area while hiking in the Mines of Spain? Join the Mines of Spain Naturalist for a guided hike! George Wyth State Park - Peregrine Charities Traithlon
When: Sunday, September 28, 2008 - 7:30 am

Cedar Rock - Evening Tours
When: Sunday, October 4, 2008 - 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
What: Tour the Frank Lloyd Wright designed home Cedar Rock under the light of the moon. This beautiful home was designed by the cultural icon Frank Lloyd Wright. The event will allow guests the opportunity to experience the home and out buildings, there will also be a fire where cookies and beverages will be served. It's the "Wright" thing to do.

Lacey Keosauqua State Park - Scenic Drive Festival
When: Saturday, October 11, 2008 - 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
            Sunday, October 12, 2008 - 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
What: Villages of Van Buren host a Scenic Drive Festival throughout the county with wood carfting vendors in each village. Lacey Keosauqua State Park will host the Buckskinners camp, portable woodmizer sawmill, and information booths. All this with beautiful scenery.

Big Creek State Park - Super Polar Plunge & Polar Plunge
When: Friday, November 7 and Saturday, November 8
What: The Polar Plunge, which takes place at 1:00 pm on November 8th, is an annual organized fundraiser by Special Olympics of Iowa. Team members from companies, organizations or individuals dress up and run into the cold November Big Creek water to raise money for Special Olympics. The Super Plunge, which lasts for 24 hours, starts at 1:00 pm on November 7, 2008 and goes until 1:00 pm, November 8, 2008. Contestants will plunge every hour on the hour over this 24 hour period.
