The Forest Management Zones consists of three types of forest management.
Maintenance category (635 acres in green) includes the mature wood stands
that are the better quality woodlands. These consist of hardwoods such as mixed
oak, with some hickory and sugar maple. Maintenance forest management would
primarily focus on the removal of invasive species and forest stand activities
such as vine removal from key trees.
Improvement category (188 acres in blue) includes the better quality successional
areas that are adjacent to the mature woodlands. These areas contain some small
oaks, bitternut hickory, elm, cherry with gray dogwoods on the edges. Forest
management would allow these areas to continue succession utilizing forest
stand activities toward selective trees release. Here again the focus will
be on removal of invasive species. This category will be reviewed every 5 years
for status of growth.
Leave category (232 acres in orange) includes the woodlands in the drainage
ways. Predominant species are silver maple, cottonwood, elm and box elder.
No management activities will occur in these except invasive specie removal.
