
Despite its close proximity to the Des Moines metro area and suburbs, one of the most popular questions about Badger Creek State
Recreation Area is "How do you get there?"
Badger Creek State Recreation Area is located in rural Madison County, about 10 miles southwest of Des Moines. From Des Moines Interstate
35, take the Grand Ave. west Exit 69 and then county road F-90 west toward Booneville. Beyond Booneville, watch for small brown DNR
public hunting/fishing sign and take Badger Creek Road (gravel road) to the south, approximately 3 miles and you'll find yourself
at the east entrance of Badger Creek.
The lake at Badger Creek is by far the most popular natural resource, and thus fishing is the most popular form of recreation. The
lake comprises of 276 acres. Largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish are the main sought after species. There are no motor
restrictions, but all boats must operate at a "no wake" speed.
Regarding fishing access, two boat ramps are located at the lake; one on the east side and one on the west side of the lake. Two fishing
jetties are located on the east side and several more jetties on the west side for bank fishing access.
Over 700 acres of public hunting land is available around the lake for outdoor recreation such as hunting, birdwatching and other nature
activities. Two picni shelters are on the east die of the lake. Camping and open fires are not permitted at Badger Creek.
