Did You Know?
America's waste stream has steadily increased every year, a result of the convenience
of disposable products, the growth of packaging waste and goods manufactured with a
limited life expectancy.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the per capita generation of solid
waste has risen from 2.7 pounds per day in 1960 to 4.6 pounds of solid waste in 2000. At the
same time, the number of permitted landfills in the United States has decreased by 75 percent
since the mid-1980s.
