HHMs and Iowa's Water

  • 78.8 percent of Iowans get their drinking water from groundwater sources; only six states rely more on groundwater for a drinking source
  • Nationwide, 41.9 percent of the population gets its drinking water from ground water
  • If improperly used and disposed of, HHMs often end up in drinking water
  • Contaminated water leads to water purity problems, often resulting in costly water treatment
  • HHMs dumped in storm sewers can quickly contaminate surface water. Surface water is also used as drinking water and is critical for fish and aquatic wildlife and recreation
  • Wells are also susceptible to contamination from improper use or disposal of HHMs
