Iowa Waste Exchange (IWE)

What is the Iowa Waste Exchange?
The Iowa Waste Exchange is one of the nation's premiere materials exchange programs. This no-cost, non-regulatory, confidential service matches institutions that produce byproducts and waste with other groups interested in using or recycling those materials. The program helps businesses, schools, hospitals and communities save disposal money and protect the environment by reducing, reusing and recycling materials.

Sell Byproducts, Find Materials
One organization's trash is another group's treasure: there's a market out there for the byproducts and wastes produced by Iowa institutions. The Iowa Waste Exchange maintains a database of available and wanted materials. Companies and other groups can use this confidential service to find a market for materials they would otherwise have to discard or warehouse, thus avoiding disposal and storage fees. The program also offers free consultations so organizations can locate needed materials or potential buyers.

Those stacks of scrap wood cluttering your warehouse might be just the item a local government needs. And, vice versa, a plant down the street might have crumb rubber that will, when purchased at a reduced cost, make your business more profitable.

Reduce Waste-related Costs
The Iowa Waste Exchange helps organizations reduce the amount of money spent on waste disposal. Groups we help can also save money in avoided purchases, reduced transportation costs, and freed storage space. One business might have a warehouse full of unneeded ink cartridges that a local elementary school could use. The Iowa Waste Exchange can match these two groups. The school gets a needed resource, while the company reduces storage and waste disposal costs.

Identify New Opportunities
Area Specialists affiliated with the Iowa Waste Exchange provide waste assessments at no cost. These professionals will examine your organization in person and come up with new ways to reduce waste, sell byproducts, and lower disposal costs. They may suggest less wasteful methods of manufacturing, let you know about other entities interested in your scrap materials, or advise you about a potentially cost-saving recycling program. Specialists can also help businesses incorporate recycled products into their manufacturing processes and test recycled content composites in their products.

Economic Development
The Iowa Waste Exchange can connect Iowa businesses and institutions interested in pollution prevention recycling programs to the necessary financial, marketing and business planning resources. The program can also provide information on recycled products, thereby improving the overall market for used or recycled goods.
