Mulching Benefits

More than 90 percent of a tree's roots occupy the top 24 inches of soil. Without protection and nourishment, roots can be damaged by temperature extremes, soil compaction, water evaporation, lawn mowers, weeds and pests.

Mulching can provide these benefits:

  • Mulch helps to recreate the organic layer and soil structure of a natural wooded environment, which promotes the growth of trees and shrubs.
  • Use of mulch helps to protect roots from extreme temperatures.
  • A mulch layer limits soil compaction, protects delicate roots from mechanical damage, and improves the quality and structure of the soil over a plant's root area.
  • Mulching controls weeds and pests, and reduces the likelihood of soil-borne disease.
  • Using mulch aids in moisture conservation and adds to the aesthetic quality of your yard.

Using Iowa Mulch
Iowa produces tons of quality wood mulch annually. When you buy Iowa mulch, you help the state in several ways:

  • Mulch provides organic benefit to the state's trees and shrubs.
  • Using Iowa mulch helps to reduce the 225,600 tons of wood that end up in landfills each year.
  • Using Iowa mulch promotes the sustainable growth of Iowa business.
