Comprehensive Planning

Citizens, local governments and solid waste facilities can evaluate existing waste management programs and develop plans and schedules for future waste reduction and recycling programs with solid waste comprehensive plans.

To assure that business, government and consumers are working in the same direction, the DNR collaborates with geographically-defined local planning areas to develop and periodically review formal plans, and to provide ongoing comments on waste management goals and strategies.

Each plan includes a thorough review of the current waste management systems and sets goals for improvement. Plans are designed to serve as a blueprint to achieving the state of Iowa's 50 percent waste diversion goal, and are reviewed by the DNR every three years to ensure forward progress continues and areas of concern are addressed.
