The West Des Moines Police Department has received numerous letters and phone
calls from hunters interested in the Special Canada goose season (September
1-15). The West Des Moines Police Department has asked that we inform hunters that the City of West Des Moines does have an ordinance
(5-2-7-5)
in effect
that allows waterfowl hunting during this early goose season within the city limits of West Des Moines
under the following conditions:
Goose hunting within the West Des Moines city limits is allowed provided that:
1) hunting is done on PRIVATE LAND, and
2) the land is ZONED AGRICULTURAL or OPEN SPACE, and
3) the land is a MINIMUM OF 20 CONTIGUOUS ACRES, and
4) LANDOWNER PERMISSION was obtained in advance, and
5) hunting is done in accordance with the Code of Iowa, administrative
rules of the Iowa DNR,
and Federal regulations regarding the taking of migratory birds.

space and/or classified by the county assessor of the county in which the
land is located as agriculture land or forest preserve and with the permission
of the landowner; and:
c. Which is a minimum of twenty (20) contiguous acres or more in size
and the hunting activity is for migratory waterfowl and is done using a
shotgun with shot ammunition and in accordance with the code of Iowa and
the administrative rules adopted by the Iowa department of natural resources."
